AI Agents for Small Businesses
What AI agents are, how they differ from automations and chatbots, where they pay off in a small business, and how to deploy one without losing control.
Every software vendor now calls its product an agent. The chatbot on a scheduling app, the rules engine inside a CRM, the email sequencer a sales rep set up three years ago. Founders hear the word every week and still can't say what one would do in a 12-person firm.
An AI agent takes a goal, works out the steps, and carries them out across more than one tool. That makes it useful for high-volume work that changes from case to case, like triaging maintenance requests for a property management company or researching a lead before a discovery call. It also carries more risk than an automation that does the same thing every time.
This category covers the practical questions: when an agent is the right choice and when a plain automation will do, specific use cases in support and lead qualification, building versus buying, the guardrails that stop an agent from emailing a client something nobody approved, and how to test one on real past cases before it touches live work.
The order that tends to work is documented processes first, automation second, and agents last, one narrow job at a time. Most of the articles here are written with that order in mind.
